A Starter’s Guide To Motorhomes
Motorhomes can be a great way to elevate a camping trip, get away from town for a while, or to build a mobile office in. But these homes-away-from-home come with some unique challenges, and it’s always best to be prepared. We here at Motorhomes of Texas want to help you make the most of your motorhome, so we’ve put together some tips for those of you who are new to using them. Use It At Home First
Even if you’re certain you know how your motorhome works, it’s best to test it out a bit before you hit the road. There might be quirks, tricks, and functions that surprise you. Spend a day or two using only the motorhome to get a feel for how you’ll use it, what tactics and usage strategies work best, etc.
Check Your Climate Controls
Here in Texas, everything is bigger—including daily temperature highs. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with your AC and even heating systems in the motorhome before you start relying on them for your daily comfort. We also recommend knowing a bit about how to fix or troubleshoot those systems, since you never know what will happen on the road.
Pack Light, Be Thorough
Your motorhome is going to have limited space aboard, so you can’t afford to bring your entire pantry, wardrobe, and entertainment system. You’ll need durable and agile dining and cooking ware that can be used for multiple things, maybe one spare set of bedding, and enough clothing and outdoor gear to get you through your planned trip. Be strategic and plan ahead, but don’t overload your motorhome. That can get cramped, and if it gets too full the engine can get overworked.
Be Careful With Electronics
On the subject of limited resources, a motorhome isn’t tied into a municipal power grid. It relies on a battery and maybe a generator, and those won’t be able to handle residential-style electronics. Hair dryers, kettles, toasters, microwaves, etc will all use too much power all at once to be useful or effective in most motorhomes. Even with lower-power electronics and careful use, you only have so much fuel and power to go around. Like we said before, be strategic and only bring and use what you need, when you need it.
Water Usage
Similarly, you’ll have to be gentle with your water. Your freshwater tank only carries so much, and unless you’re near a refill station you should be careful not to waste it. Long showers, taking your time washing hands or dishes, and other water-usage should be minimized to ensure you have enough.
