RVs are the best way to enhance your camping experience, but they can be a big investment. If you need to stretch your budget a bit, consider buying your RV used! We know that can sound scary, so we here at Motorhomes of Texas have put together a few tips to make sure a used RV is right for you. Research

Your first step is to buckle down and get reading. You should consider what types of RV you might want, including whether you prefer a motorhome or a towable RV. If you choose a towable option, make sure you own a vehicle that can handle the weight and that you’re comfortable dragging your bedroom behind you on the road. Also consider the features you want, like AC, types of sleeping arrangements, slide-outs, etc.

Then look around at different brands and check the manufacturers’ websites to see if they have what you need, or if any specific models have been recalled. Look around at current and previous owners’ reviews to see if there are any trends. Luckily, a used RV is more likely to have that info on the net, so you shouldn’t have to hunt too much.

Ask Questions

When you get to the dealership or private seller of the RV you’re interested in, ask a lot of questions about the camper—every single question you can think of, in fact. Ask for a maintenance history, whether any parts were or need to be replaced, etc.

We recommend buying from dealerships like us at Motorhomes of Texas because we’re more likely to have that information readily available. We also rely on customer satisfaction to continue running our business, whereas a private seller doesn’t need to make a good impression.

Inspection

Carefully inspect the entire RV once you’re satisfied with its history. Check that all moving parts work correctly, that doors and windows lock, and that there are no signs of infestations or water damage. Make sure all the appliances work properly, as well.

Test Drive

You should also try to test drive the RV, particularly if it’s a motorhome. A motorhome’s engine needs as much care as any truck or car, so you want to see how it handles and whether it’s in good condition. This should reveal any issues you missed in your inspection. Even if it’s in perfect condition, you may discover that it’s too difficult to handle on the road, which is a good thing to know before you commit.
