Traveling With Pets: Tips And Tricks

Lifestyle

While some animals love to jump in a car or a motorhome, others might need some time to adjust. Here are a few things you can do to ensure that your four-legged friend has a great time on the road with you!

Tip 1: Get Your Pet Acclimated

Start by taking your dog or cat on short car trips throughout the week leading up to their first adventure in the motorhome. Some animals get car sick, while others have no problem. If your pet does get sick, try feeding them earlier, giving them more water while in the vehicle, and running the AC or rolling down the windows. These test drives will also give you a chance to test out harnesses that latch onto seatbelts or seat covers for the back seats.

Tip 2: Keep Vaccinations and Tags Updated

Make sure your furry friend has all their vaccinations and has updated tags on their collar. Most campgrounds allow pets, but they will want to ensure your pet won't cause issues around other animals. Updated tags are very important — if your companion gets lost, your name and number will make getting them back home much easier.

Also, while your pet may be well trained, in most parks and campgrounds they will need to be on a leash at all times when outside of the motorhome.

Tip 3: Be Prepared for Your Pet's Business

For cats, top entry litter boxes don't take up a lot of space and conceal odors very well. For dogs, make sure to bring small plastic bags to pick up after them. There are many items available online that make picking up after your pet hassle free.

Tip 4: Make a Road Trip Survival Kit for Your Companion

Having a bag or bucket that stores all of your pet's essentials — water and food dish, leash, brushes, food, and treats — will save a lot of space in your motorhome. Keep the kit in a compartment out of reach from little noses that can smell food from a mile away!

Tip 5: Take Lots of Pictures!

Take lots of pictures with you and your four-legged friends having a blast on your RV adventure and share them with us on Facebook or Twitter! Use the hashtag #PetsOnTheMoveWithMOT. Have fun and safe travels — we look forward to seeing your pictures with your friendly companions!
