Motorhomes are one of the best ways to elevate a camping trip into a camping experience, but first you need to get it to the campground. That requires healthy tires, so it’s important to make sure your tires are in good shape. We here at Motorhomes of Texas want to help you stay safe and get where you’re going, so we’ve put together some tips for motorhome tire maintenance. Check Tire Pressure

You should do this before and after every drive to ensure your tire pressure is where it needs to be. Use a tire pressure gauge to ensure each tire meets the recommended psi in your owner’s manual. Tires with too much or too little pressure are unsafe, impact your fuel efficiency, and make your drive more difficult and less comfortable.

Consider installing a tire pressure monitoring system, which takes the guesswork out of the equation. This system tells you when your tire pressure is incorrect. If your tires don’t retain their pressure when you refill them, they may have been punctured and will need patching or replacement.

Inspect The Tread

Your tire tread is what provides you with the traction you need to remain in control on the road. This will naturally get worn down after time, which will cause skidding, sliding, and spin-outs. If your tread ever reaches a depth of only 1/16”, it will need to be replaced, and it’s best to replace all tires if any one hits that point to ensure they all wear down evenly.

If you discover that they aren’t wearing down evenly, take your rig in to a mechanic immediately. This may indicate an alignment issue.

Don’t Overpack

Your motorhome can handle a fair amount of cargo, but you never want to overdo it. Your tires are only designed to carry so much weight, and adding more on top of that limit may cause them to wear down faster, lose air pressure, or even blow out. Make sure you also distribute the weight as evenly as you can from front to back and left to right to avoid wearing down some tires faster than others.

Storing Your Tires

If you ever put your motorhome in storage for an extended period of time, like over the winter, we recommend removing the tires entirely to prevent them from wearing down in one spot. If you can’t remove them, try to rotate them by 1/4 rotation every couple weeks to avoid wearing down one spot on them too quickly.
