Pre-Owned Coach: How Many Miles Are "Too Many"

Shopping for a pre-owned motorhome, the question of current mileage always comes up. So how many miles are "too many"? The answer is complex, but fundamentally, there really is no such thing as too many miles. While this may sound counterintuitive initially, closer examination reveals that unlike purchasing a car, the odometer reading should not be the primary factor in determining a motorhome's condition.

Consider a motorhome initially like you would a fifth wheel or travel trailer without an odometer. Your first step upon entering should be assessing the air quality. Mildew has a distinctive odor—if detected, a leak exists somewhere requiring investigation before proceeding.

Next, examine these indicators: carpet wear in high-traffic areas and front seat edges; scrape marks on kitchen cabinet and storage compartment edges; drawer conditions at kitchen counters; microwave interior roof for heavy-use evidence; gas cooktop areas for grease buildup; air-conditioner outlet dirt marks; entry door step and frame wear; mattress condition under bedspreads; refrigerator odors (ammonia indicates cooling unit leakage); engine area for fluid leaks; battery corrosion; and seam sealer condition.

This inspection demonstrates an important principle: a coach could fail all these tests with just 1,000 miles, while another could pass with 200,000 miles. We have traded for a Blue Bird with nearly 200,000 miles that was practically new due to meticulous maintenance. Conversely, very-low-mileage units have arrived in terrible condition.

While checking the speedometer matters, don't let it tell the entire story. With proper maintenance, high-end motorhomes like Country Coach, Newell, and Foretravel endure for generations.
