Before Every Trip
No matter how often you travel in your motorhome, check each item on this list before starting the engine, and continue checking regularly throughout your trip.
- Tires: Inspect each tire and ensure that your tire pressure matches the recommended psi (as indicated in your owner’s manual). This is especially important when your motorhome has been stationary for an extended period of time, as tires can degrade rapidly when sitting still.
- Lights: Check that your headlights and brake lights are working properly.
- Roof: Remove any debris from the roof of your vehicle.
- Doors: Close and lock all doors and secure any storage compartments. Loose items should always be stowed inside storage compartments during travel.
- Appliances: Make sure all electrical devices are unplugged during travel.
- Cords & Hoses: Double check that your shore power cord and plumbing hoses have been disconnected before departure.
Once Per Month
- Battery: Check the water level of your battery and add distilled water as needed.
- Generator: Gas and diesel degrade over time, and can clog up your generator when left sitting for long periods. Run your generator with a load every month to prevent your fuel from going bad and causing damage.
Every 3 Months
- LP Gas Lines: Using a soap solution or leak detector, check your LP gas lines for leaks.
- Alarm Systems: Test your smoke detector and your carbon monoxide/LP detectors.
- Windows/Hardware: Check that your windows and hardware are operating normally.
- Air Conditioner: Clean out or replace air filters as needed.
- Seals: Clean the seals around your doors, roof, toilet, and shower, and check seals for cracking and wear.
- Battery Cables: Tighten and clean your battery cables as needed.
Twice Per Year
- Slide-Outs: Inspect any slide-outs for a proper seal, and apply seal conditioner as needed.
- Alarm Systems: Replace the batteries in your smoke detector and your carbon monoxide/LP detectors.
- Tires: Rotate tires as recommended by your manufacturer.
- Gas Appliances: Check that any gas appliances are functioning properly.
- LP System: Have your LP system inspected by a technician.
Once Per Year
- Roof: Have your roof and joint seals inspected by a technician.
- Moisture: Thoroughly inspect your motorhome for possible leaks and water damage.
- Water: Sanitize your fresh water system.
- Exterior: Wax and buff the exterior of your motorhome to keep weather damage at bay.
