Texas Beach Camping 101

Are you dreaming of a change of scenery or eager to take your motorcoach out camping? The US has no shortage of places to play in the sand and waves or relax in the sun. Many public and private beaches can be found along the coast and public parks provide travelers an opportunity to experience wildlife and the beaches in their natural state. The key to having a great beach camping experience is being prepared for the elements before you arrive. Here are a few tips for beach camping:


  • Be prepared for the tricky conditions driving and parking in sand can create. Before driving out onto the oceanfront sand you should come prepared with a shovel, towrope, and a few boards in case you get stuck.
  • Check the weather and the tides. It’s important to know how high the tide will rise over the course of the day and also to be aware of weather changes like a storm and how that can affect your ability to drive on the sand.
  • In addition to being mindful of the tide, the wind is also an element you need to be prepared for when you are camping on the beach. Don’t leave your awning extended when it’s not being used. Pin everything down like your tablecloths and keep napkins in a caddy, so they don’t blow away.
  • Check with local officials especially if you’re at a state park. The rangers and staff can keep you up to date on special conditions or considerations you need to be aware of during your stay.
  • It’s recommended you air down your tires because letting some air out can make it easier for your vehicle to have the traction it needs to get back off the sand. Just make sure you have the necessary equipment to fill them back up as soon as possible once your back on normal roads.
  • Always respect nature and your outdoor camping space by not leaving litter behind for the wildlife or other campers. And take care to stay off the dunes! Most areas will have signs. They are natural barriers that protect the environment and the creatures living there.

 There are so many options when it comes to beach camping in Texas. The great thing about beach camping is you can enjoy the ocean view without a high price tag and even turn it into an annual family tradition! Here are just a few places to get started beach camping:
