Tips and Tricks: Solving Outdoor Camping Issues
Tips and tricks from our in house expert: Linda. We all love to go camping, especially in the summertime! Sometimes you run into some issues though. Pesky mosquitos, the campfire won't start, or the table cloth keep's flying away! Linda has solutions for some of the most common issue's you may encounter when camping.
- Home-Made Mosquito Trap
Bugs. There is a reason why we call them pest, especially the biting kind like mosquitos. Everyone seems to agree on two things about them: mosquitos can be the worst thing about camping outdoors, and the only good mosquito is a dead one. So, here is one easy way to help keep mosquitos at bay while enjoying the outdoors using only simple household items. You'll need a plastic bottle (any kind works: coke, milk, water), scissors, tape, 1 teaspoon yeast, 1/2 cup of sugar, and some lukewarm water. First, take your empty plastic bottle and cut it in half so that the top part will fit upside-down inside the bottom part. Tape the cut edges together in a tight seal. Next, pour the yeast, sugar, and water into the bottle. Shake lightly to mix.
Why this works: Mosquitos are attracted to the carbon dioxide that you exhale. The yeast feeds off of the sugar and emits the same gas. This gas attracts the mosquitos which then become trapped inside the bottle and ultimately drown in the water.
Now you can enjoy being outside again knowing the mosquitos won't be bugging you.

Need a quick and easy way to start your campfire? This is the best kind of camping tip where you get to be Earth-friendly by recycling All you need is an empty cardboard egg carton and some charcoal. Make sure the egg carton is not made from styrofoam. Just fill each egg cup with a charcoal brickette, close the carton, and once you've set your carton of charcoal eggs in the fire pit, set it ablaze! It makes storage, transportation, and burning so quick and easy.
Kid-Friendly Tablecloth Anchors
The mosquitos are repelled, the fire is crackling and the weather is perfect - except for a little pesky wind. The tablecloth keeps trying to fly away! If you can grab a couple of heavy palm-sized stones and some twine, your problem is solved. Wrap the stones with twine so two stones remain connected far apart enough so they can hang over the sides of the table, width-wise. And now, you're set!
BONUS TIP: For added fun, let the grandkids paint the stones before wrapping. Now you've added instant sentimental value to reusable table anchors!
