Owning a Motorhome or RV is an all-inclusive way to travel and see the world or live with the comforts of home on the road full-time. It can be confusing to understand the different classifications of motorhomes. We will discuss the types here and what you need to know about them to help you purchase the right one for your needs.

Motorhome Classifications

There are three main types of motorhomes and each have a designated letter. Each class within the letter has a wide range of sizes and prices.

  • Class A: These are the bus-shaped models and are considered medium to large RVs. They can range in size from 25-50 feet and typically sleep 6-8 people. These are often considered one of the best options for full timer’s and long term RVers. Class A motorhomes are known for having residential style appliances such as washers and dryers and refrigerators as well as high quality electronics and custom furniture. This is the most popular choice for anyone wanting to have all the comforts of home. They also have plenty of storage and options for slide-outs to increase living and storage space.
  • Class B: Camper vans that are based on a van and pack a lot into a small space. They range in size from 20-26 feet long and can sleep 2-4 people. The van chassis structure of this motorhome makes it very versatile for going from a big city adventure to camping. Even though the size is compact, manufacturers have designed the interiors to fit all the essentials.
  • Class C: These have a cutaway chassis van cab front and often are considered the all in one model. They are usually 22-35 feet long and sleep 4-8 people. The shorter chassis means these RVs may fit in places larger RVs can’t which make them a great option for more remote camping and exploring. Class Cs offer similar amenities as Class As just on a smaller scale. Class Cs are built on a truck chassis with gas and diesel options available and numerous floor plans to choose from.

Some of the well-known and trusted brands for motorhomes are: Foretravel, Tiffin, Newell and Newmar. We have put together several posts for everything you need to know about each of these brands and you can read more here.

Choices extend beyond brand and model; each model comes with a variety of floor plans and lengths along with options to customize interior and layout.

To summarize, a motorhome has the furnishings and comforts of home combined with the mechanics of a truck.
