Company Beginnings

Founder L.K. Newell began his career not as a motorhome manufacturer, but as a dissatisfied motorhome owner. He traveled from Oklahoma to California in 1967 to buy a Streamline Trailer Company motorhome, only to return to the El Monte factory within a fortnight with a litany of design changes that he wanted to make to the motorhome.

However, Newell’s enhancements were not well-received by the company’s owner, who challenged Newell to buy the company if he thought he could do better. So he bought the motorhome division of Streamline Trailer Company that day, took it back to Miami, OK, and christened it Newell Coach Corporation. Ever since then, Newell Coach has been in business, manufacturing better motorhomes than anyone had ever seen.

A Legacy of Innovation
 

Newell immediately began to change up construction methods and blend bus construction elements into his motorhome designs. He released his first rear-engine motorhome in 1969 off a bus design, which included under-body storage and air brakes. But Newell also incorporated motorhome features like a front-mount generator and mid-entry door. He made sure to leave room in his designs for custom building, too.

The first pusher motorhome chassis was built by Newell in 1970, followed by the company’s first diesel-fueled motorhome in 1972. These innovations were years ahead of other companies in the motorhome industry, and many of the motorhome design elements that are commonplace today were developed by Newell.

Passing the Torch

Newell elected to sell his company to Chuck and Letty Goldenberg in 1973 because of his ailing health. The Goldenbergs did some reorganization and committed themselves to satisfying customers. In 1979, they sold the company to a motorhome-obsessed couple who had just been passing through Miami: Karl and Alice Blade. The company has been in their possession for decades and continues to produce high-quality motorhomes with luxury features and a great track record when it comes to customer satisfaction.
