Tips and tricks with Linda: How to solve the love bug problem.

Now is the season for the dreaded black Lovebug invasion. From now until there is a light cold snap in the south, the Lovebugs will create havoc on the front of all our vehicles, the largest being our beloved motorhomes.

Lovebugs are drawn to white or light colored vehicles. The first tip is to begin your trip early in the morning, as they don’t fly until their wings dry from the morning dew. Next, you should wash your motorhome as soon as possible after your stop for the day. If you are able to eliminate them while they are freshly splattered on your vehicle, the removal process will be easier. Once they dry and cure it is like washing cement off.

Their chemical bodily fluid is acidic and over time if your motorhome is not cleaned regularly, the acid will literally eat the paint from the metal surfaces and etch fiberglass.

There are cleaners out there; however, I discovered Bounce fabric softener sheets work well. The bugs will dissolve when you wet the vehicle and rub the fabric sheet over a small area and rinse thoroughly. Do not allow the fabric sheet solution to dry on the vehicle; this is most important step. Afterwards, you can wash with soap to ensure the vehicle is clean. I tried using liquid fabric softener, but it didn’t work the same.

An added benefit to using the fabric softener sheets is that they also dissolve road tar and grease. Again, make sure you don’t let it dry on the vehicle surface.

Until next time, travel often and remember, you don’t have to go far in our great country to see amazing places and meet wonderful new friends! I hope you create many memories to share with your family and friends in your travels.
