Remove it From Storage

The first thing you need to do before you travel is take your motorhome out of storage. Maybe it’s in your garage, a storage unit, or somewhere else. No matter where your vehicle is, you’ll need to bring it out into the open to get it ready for your upcoming trip. If your motorhome has been stored for a while and you didn’t have the engine serviced or fill the fuel tank before storing it, now is the time to do so.

Make sure to change the oil before you hit the road! If your motorhome has been under cover or parked in a storage facility, perform a thorough inspection. Check for any signs of rodent damage and charge your battery if necessary.

Test All Systems

Next, you want to test your motorhome’s systems. Test out power leveling systems and plug in the motorhome into a shore power source, if available. Check the propane level before you test out any appliances. If the level is good, you’re ready to go. If it’s not, stop by a refilling station. Check for any leaks in your motorhome by smelling for gas. It’s a good idea to have the propane system leak-tested by a professional annually. Check the fridge and other appliances too.

Make sure you take a look at the water system, AC appliances, and other technology too. This may include Wi-Fi repeaters, entertainment systems, antenna boosters, and more.

Perform an Exterior Inspection

Before you take your motorhome on the road, you’ll also need to perform an exterior inspection. This entails checking the roof and seals. Clean the roof per the manufacturer’s instructions. After it’s dry, look for any cracks in the sealant or areas with open bubbles or blisters. You may need to reseal some areas. It’s a good idea to refer to your owner’s manual to find out what sealant to use. Check the vent covers, antennas, solar panels, and skylights to see if any repairs are needed.

Once the roof is clean, you can turn your attention to the sides. Check all windows and doors for seal integrity. Clean the windows inside and out. It’s also important to clean your awning since it can become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Waxing the exterior of your motorhome will keep the surface protected and looking brand new.

Next, check the tires. Make sure there are no signs of cracking and dry rot. Check out the tire pressure too, and ensure that it’s where it needs to be. Your tires may look fine at first glance, but it’s important to thoroughly inspect them before your motorhome hits the road.

Clean the Interior

One of the final steps you can do to prepare your motorhome for travel is clean the interior. One of the big appeals of having a motorhome is that it provides you a place to sleep and live during trips. This means the inside of your rig matters. Perform a thorough cleaning and check for any rodent damage. Make sure to check every nook and cranny so you don’t run into any surprises on the road!
