One of the best things you can do for your motorhome is use it frequently. Often times the biggest maintenance issues are caused by disuse. Our previous tech support specialist recommends taking your motorhome out at least once a month. Otherwise pests can become a problem. Another issue for your motorhome if you leave it in storage in the heat too long is that algae can build up in the fuel tank.
A problem with storing a gas or diesel motorhome for longer than a month is that the fuel starts to deteriorate. But keeping your motorhome running at it’s best doesn’t have to be a difficult task. An easy solution is putting a product like Sta Bil Fuel stabilizer in your motorhomes fuel tank. A stabilizer formula added to the fuel prevents the fuel from causing problems during storage. There are other benefits and types of fuel stabilizer as well.
Using a fuel stabilizer won’t just keep impurities from building up in your fuel system, it will also improve the performance in your engine. Without the extra build-up the motor doesn’t have to work as hard. Fuel stabilizer also saves fuel. Instead of draining out fuel that has gone bad the fuel stabilizer will keep fuel fresh while your motorhome is in storage. It will also eliminate cold starts. When you try to start your engine after it has been sitting idle for a long time, you might have a cold start. Fuel stabilizer will help that first start go smoothly.
Fuel stabilizers have storage-based formulas. Most formulas claim up to two years of protection. There are also performance-based formulas that work great but won’t last long. The top recommended brands are Sta-Bil (designed for performance, marine, and diesel,) Starbrite, and Sea Foam. Something to keep in mind: each brand is formulated specifically for the type of fuel.
Other considerations are if you are storing in the winter you will need a different based fuel stabilizer. Some tips for using fuel stabilizers: add it before filling your tank so the additive is mixed evenly. Follow the directions and use the appropriate amounts for your vehicle and be careful if you have a diesel engine and use only stabilizers designed for use with diesel fuel.
